A-Z Musicals: F

This one came to mind instantly, no questions asked.

I love this musical. LOVE IT. The music...you guys, THE MUSIC. I've played in the pit for it twice now, and I love getting to shwank out some slinky clarinet action for the bottle dance at the wedding...but seriously, I love all of it.

I love Tevye's devotion, and yet his willingness to change and improve, his love for his daughters, the unity of their traditions and how important religious traditions really are. I love the messages, the lyrics, the characters, and yes, the Fiddler.

I have the soundtrack on vinyl, one of the records I took from my parents' collection with permission after I finally got a record player. This is one of those book to film/musical adaptations which does a pretty good job of getting it right, though there are still a number of differences, such as how there's no pogrom by Tzeitl's wedding in the book, and how Chava repents of her sin of intermarriage and returns home in the book.

My high school did Fiddler on the Roof once and had so many left over wine bottles and guys who knew how to dance with them on their heads they incorporated another bottle dance number into the next year. Great musical!
